It's Shoulder Tilt...AND...Shoulder Turn

This topic is among golf's best kept secrets.  Why do golfers swing over-the-top or outside-in?  It's because they turn their shoulders on the downswing rather than "tilt" first.  It is the shoulder tilt on the down swing that creates the inside path and angular acceleration, (club head lag).  As soon as you turn your shoulders, on the down swing, the golf club will travel outward.  Being that centrifugal force travels outward, the golf club shaft will loose it's angle and the result is you loose club head speed.

Take a look at this video and drill that will help you create both lag in your down swing and increase your club head speed.

Proof Is In The Pudding...I Mean Putting!

Maybe you haven't heard of Boo Weekly, pro golfer on the PGA tour.  Well, he was this past year anyway.  He's back at Tour School trying to work his way back to the tour.  What's the big deal you ask?

Well Boo happened to be the number player on tour in greens in regulation!  Number one!  One would think that if you hit the golf ball on the green more often than anybody else out there, you would win a ton of money and endorsements galore!  You're rich!

Not so.  Boo was number one in greens in regulation but 192 in putting.  Still, he hit it better on the rest of the golf course than anyone else? I would still think that would set you up for at least the middle of the pack.  No, he lost his tour card, and is now having to gruel it out with all the rookies again, to earn his opportunity to play on tour on a regular basis.

Surely he will still get some sponsor exemptions if he doesn't make it but still, first in greens in regulation!  He hit it more consistent than anybody else and gets tossed out.

Moral of the story is, work on your putting.  It is literally 50% of the shots on the score card (36 strokes allowed for par).  Start with the short putts of six feet and in.  Use a short stroke to maintain club face angle.  On the long putts, you can use the long flowing stroke. Pace is the issue on long putts.

Here's a drill that might help with short putts.
