Dustin Johnson using a 10.5 degree driver?

Alright macho man, Bloomberg television showed a short clip on the making of Dustin Johnson's driver and it shows that he was building a 10.5 degree lofted driver.  I bet you thought that all these long hitters were using low lofted drivers, like 7.5 or 8.5.  You must take into consideration that Dustin has a very closed position at the top of his back swing.  The closed position actually reduces the loft on the golf club.  So, his 10.5 plays like an 8.5.

To reach what is "effective loft" you must add the loft on the golf club itself, the angle of attack of your swing path and the club face angle at impact.  That is why I insist that it is not necessarily the brand of golf club or the fitting system, it is the ability of the fitter to understand and recognize the idiosyncrasies of the golfer's swing and how the golf club fits into the golfer's swing pattern.

Here's a great interview with Butch Harmon on Dustin Johnson, (his student) that is well worth watching.  Butch also supports a teaching philosophy that is very, very, very close to what we do here at Quick Fix Golf.  Personalized instruction allowing you to use your personal assets and tendencies.
